Reform of the Psychotherapists Act

The new Psychotherapists Act (PsychThG) came into force on 1 September 2020. Current information can be found on the website https://psychotherapie.dgps.de/ under the tab “Psychotherapy Reform”. This law applies to all students who start studying psychology after 1 September 2020 with the aim of becoming a psychotherapist. Students who start a new degree programme in winter semester 2020/21 can only obtain a licence to practise via Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes that meet the requirements of the 2020 Licensing Regulations. For students enrolled in a psychology degree programme before 1 September 2020, however, the PsychThG in its 1999 version will continue to apply until 2032 (training to become a psychotherapist must be completed by 1 September 2032).

The current Bachelor's degree programme in Psychology does not meet the legal requirements for future psychotherapist training. Students who have started the Bachelor's degree programme in Psychology from the winter semester 2020/21 and possibly graduate here will therefore not have access to the new Master's degree programme in Psychotherapy. This means that training to become a psychotherapist is ruled out. TU Darmstadt will also not offer a “Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy” licence degree programme in the future.
